In folk songs - The Holland Handkerchief, The Wife of Usher's Well, The Cruel Ship's Carpenter - ghosts are consistently portrayed as flesh-and-blood revenants, more like our image of a vampire than anything that can walk through walls. I'd be interested to know when that changed.
