THE KNEALE ARCHIVES

It's been quite a while since we noted a new philatelic issue of interest to Forteans, but I know many of our readers will be interested in a new set of stamps from the Isle of Man, commemorating the centenary of the birth of Nigel Kneale, creator of Professor Quatermass. The stamps show portraits of Kneale against background collages representing his books, films and TV dramas.

MAKE UFOLOGY PHILATELY

Luis R. González. An Alien in My Mailbox. Ediciones Coliseeo Sentosa, 2021.

Regular followers of Magonia Review will know that from time to time I draw their attention to new issues of postage stamps featuring subjects of interest to our readers. These have often been stamps depicting legends and folklore, or mythical creatures and cryptozoology. From responses I have received it is clear that there is quite a community of philatelists with Fortean interests.

TALES FROM THE SEA

Regular follower of Magonia review will know that from time to time we like to feature new issues of postage stamps depicting topics of Magonian interest - ghosts, legends, folklore, historical mysteries, etc. The Channel Island of Jersey has issued a second set of stamps on a folklore theme, this set illustrating 'Tales from the Sea'. The first set is described HERE.

CURIOUS CUSTOMS

Following on from the earlier announcement
http://pelicanist.blogspot.com/2019/06/curiouser-and-curiouser.html
I am now able to reproduce clear images of the eight 'Curious Customs' stamps that will be issued by Royal Mail on 9th July. There has been some controversy about the designs, but I rather like them;  they have a slightly folksy, amateurish feel about them. I could imagine them as locally-made posters advertising the events. If you've any comments, use the Comments link, below.

TALES OF MAN

Here is another new issue of folklore stamps, which might be of interest to Fortean Philatelists, of which there are quite a few. The Isle of Man, midway between England, Scotland and Ireland, has a rich heritage of traditional lore from its Celtic and Viking history. The description of the six stamps, is taken from the Manx Post Office publicity information.

STAMPING OUT DEMONS

From time to time I like to make a note of new postage stamps which are likely to be of interest to collectors with a Fortean inclination. A new folklore-themed set from Sri Lanka shows characters called sanni, who are masked dancers in the role of exorcists. Instead of exorcising ghosts, these rather frightening figures are meant to chase off particular illnesses and ailments.

LETTERS FROM FAIRYLAND

Magonia Review has developed something of a tradition of noting forthcoming sets of postage stamps from around the world, which have themes related to the kind of topics we cover in this blog. Fairies have cropped up quite a few times recently in our book reviews, so readers may be interested in a new set of stamps to be issued by the postal authorities in the Channel Island of Guernsey.

GOING POSTAL: JERSEY AND CANADA

From time to time we like to present new postage stamps which feature Fortean and other anomalous phenomena, as we know there are quite a few collectors of this topic. Two recent sets might be of interest to Magonia readers.

STAMPING OUT WITCHCRAFT

Collectors of Fortean-related stamps - and we know there are quite a few out there - will be interested in a new stamp issued by the Ã…land Islands, a small self-governing dependency of Finland with an entirely Swedish-speaking population. The stamps, depicting a dramatic image of a witch about to be executed, mark the 350th anniversary of the first witch trails in the islands, which at the time were part of Sweden.

GHOST POST

Last year the Canada Post issued a set of stamps illustrating ghostly happening across the country. They have now followed this with a second set, showing more haunted sites in Canada. There are five stamps, all for the domestic postal rate. They are also issued as a miniature sheet.

MORE FORTEAN PHILATELY

From time to time we've carried news about new stamps with fortean themes, and it seems there are quite a few collectors of this topic. I'm sure they'll be interested to hear about a new issue from Canada which records ghostly and fortean tales from across the country. Appropriately this set was issued on Friday 13th June. The press information from Canada Post describes the subjects of the stamps:

FORTEAN PHILATELY

In Peter Rogerson's recent review of a cryptozoology title he noted that the Icelandic postal authorities had recently issued a set of stamps depicting some of the weird and wonderful creatures that haunt the seas around their island. Now their Nordic neighbours in the Faroe Islands, a self-governing Danish dependency in the Atlantic about 300 kilometers north-west of Scotland, have issued stamps depicting some of the creatures that haunt the islanders' dreams and legends.
